Thanks for rejoining me!
I first apologize for the disappearance of this website. The site started experiencing technical problems some time back and I had trouble finding time to dedicate myself to the fix. The eventual solution was to start with a fresh site and a new web host. This will provide better stability and availability, but it also means that I have to re-create all of the content from the original site. This has taken longer than I would have liked…
I haven’t finished re-publishing past articles, but I figure I have enough to turn the site on and start publishing new information and research findings. You will notice that all of the old content carries the original publication date. Since many of the entries reference previous ones, I thought this would be the cleaner approach.
Unfortunately, I’m not able to duplicate all of the great discussions that took place in the comments on the old site, but I hope to reconnect with many of the Toy cousins and previous readers through this new site. As always, I look forward to your comments and suggestions for future Toy research.
Just received some interesting info. from Ancestry. Funny one being grandpop being arrested for stealing brass from the powder mills in 1908. It’s a hoot because his testimony about working for one year in the mills is on record at Hagley. He did’t mention the theft. I guess that is why he left. Some girl named Tuesday uncovered the news journal article. She is unrelated to the family. Come to think of it, you probably got the information also.

Hi Marian! I know Tuesday. She’s a Toy though the Cornelius Toy line. And you’re right that I have the newspaper article. I can send it to you if you like. I got the clipping from Newspapers.com. It’s a pretty pricey service, but there are quite a few interesting articles about the Toys that can be found there.

Hey there, good to hear from you. Yes, send me whatever you have. How interesting these people were and there is probably so much more that we will never know. I remember as a child being in a taxi with Henry, Robert and my father having a grand old time with my “rich uncles”. How amazing that something was dug up that happened 110 years ago. Toys sure made the news. No wonder Hagley told me Toys we’re famous. Do you know what surgery grand mom Toy had before her heart attack?

Welcome to the site, Gabrielle! Yes, Daniel was killed in a powder explosion in August 1832.
I’m guessing your grandmother was Marie Theresa McLaughlin. Am I right? If you have any questions about the Toy family, just let me know.

Daniel Toy was also my great, great, great grandfather. My maiden name was Marian Loretta Toy. I live in Wilmington, Delaware about 5 miles from the Hagley Powder mills that are now a museum. The old Toy family houses are still there on the Brandywine River.

Hi Marian,
I was looking at Reese’s blog and saw that he never answered your question about Grandmom Toy’s surgery. She had her gall bladder removed. I was eight, almost nine and remember the day she died like it was yesterday.
I would love to get together with you. Are you retired? Maybe you could come over for lunch one day and we could share our memories.

Hi Maryanne. So glad to hear from you. I always wondered about her surgery because I had colon cancer and wondered if that was her surgery. I’d be glad to meet you. Glad you were astute in noticing that. I’ve been retired for 15 years. I’ll be freed up in a couple of weeks, you can call me at 798 9769.

Marian sent me the picture – Thanks! I’m familiar with this. My brother-in-law (a Toy) actually has one along with a couple of others.
I think the article is off on a couple of points. The brewery was constructed in 1867 for the purpose of “brewing porter, ale, mineral water etc.” according to an article in the Smyrna Time Newspaper. Daniel moved back to Wilmington and 1873 and the business was closed in 1875.

No. Wrong Daniel. This Daniel was the eldest son of James A Toy and Ann Curran. I haven’t written anything for the blog recently. Maybe I’ll post a bio of this Daniel.
